Couples and partners therapy in Fort Collins at Mindful Transitions offers a compassionate, experienced space for relationships to heal, grow, and rediscover connection. Whether you are married, dating, in a non-traditional partnership, or navigating a significant transition together — every relationship deserves support.
My name is John Kinnaird. I have been working with trauma, conflict and uncertainty in relationships since 1998 and bring 30 years of clinical experience to every session. I understand that reaching out for support takes courage. Additionally, I want you to know that seeking therapy is not a sign that your relationship has failed — it is a sign that you value it enough to fight for it.
What Brings Couples and Partners to Therapy?
Relationships are hard. Even the strongest partnerships face moments of disconnection, conflict, or pain. Because of this, many couples wait far longer than they should before reaching out for support. Some of the most common reasons couples and partners come to Mindful Transitions include:
- Communication breakdown — the same arguments on repeat with no resolution
- Emotional distance and feeling disconnected from your partner
- Rebuilding trust after infidelity or betrayal
- Navigating major life transitions — career changes, loss, illness, or retirement
- Conflict around parenting, finances, or life decisions
- Recovery from narcissistic abuse or relationship trauma
- Premarital counseling and building a strong foundation
- Non-traditional relationships — polyamorous, LGBTQ+, and other partnership structures
My Approach to Couples and Partners Therapy
I use an integrative approach to couples and partners therapy that draws on decades of clinical experience and training in multiple evidence-based modalities. Furthermore, I tailor every approach to the specific needs, goals, and dynamics of each unique partnership.
My work with couples draws on:
- Mindfulness Based Therapy — building present moment awareness and emotional regulation within the relationship
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) — understanding how each partner’s inner world shapes the relationship dynamic
- Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic approaches — exploring how past experiences and attachment patterns influence current relationship struggles
- Motivational Interviewing — helping partners clarify their shared goals and values
However, more than any specific technique, the foundation of my work is the therapeutic relationship itself. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where both partners feel genuinely heard, understood, and respected.
What to Expect in Couples and Partners Therapy
Sessions at Mindful Transitions are 55 minutes and are structured around your specific goals as a couple or partnership. Initially, we spend time understanding each partner’s perspective, the patterns that have developed between you, and what you are both hoping to achieve.
Couples therapy at Mindful Transitions is available as private pay only — this means your sessions remain completely confidential without the requirement of a clinical diagnosis. Therefore, what happens in the therapy room stays between us.
I work with all relationship structures including married couples, dating partners, non-traditional and polyamorous partnerships, and LGBTQ+ relationships. Every partnership is welcomed here with equal care and respect.
